Timeless Dance is an evening of dances presented by three generations of East Bay choreographers: Ruth Botchan, Mary Reid, and Claudine Naganuma. The shared program will be presented for two nights at Western Sky Studio located in the iconic Sawtooth Building in Berkeley. Join the artists and an intergenerational cast of 11 Bay Area professional dancers for a performance that explores timeless facets of human existence: from grief to joy, and from whimsy to resistance.
Timeless Dance is presented by Terrain, an East Bay-based dance collective founded in 1997 by Ruth Botchan and Mary Reid. By sharing space, process, and product, the collective believes that dance artists can increase the impact of the art form, bolster community, and strengthen human connection.
Ruth Botchan and her company will present Time and Eternity, a work that expresses the joy of being in the moment, reflects on aging and the stages of life, and, excavates the deep emotions buried in grief. Botchan will also present Invention, a premiere that explores the raw materials of dance with wonder.
Ding, choreographed by Mary Reid, has been unfolding since the pandemic, where she found herself inspired by two friends' sharing a spontaneous dance duet on FaceBook. With humor, gesture, and light-hearted whimsy, Ding explores the place where isolation can be dissolved by connection and develop into lifelong relationships where care and kindness can be central to our experience.
Guest choreographer Claudine Naganuma will share an excerpt from her newly premiered work Unbound, a creative inquiry regarding the uptick in Anti-Asian violence that affects our communities. Informed by a legacy of generational trauma, this dance explores navigating through daily as an American woman from the Asian diaspora.
Timeless Dance will speak to multiple generations of audiences and is a performance experience created to share the practice and art of dancemaking as it looks over a lifetime.
