In 1854, with the first arrival of the railroad from the east, 1,200 people were inspired to take a grand steamboat excursion on the upper Mississippi River. The 2004 edition will recreate this historic journey that brought worldwide attention to America’s then wild, western frontier. At a cost of $3 billion, the highlight will be the “Grand Flotilla,” billed as the largest gathering of riverboats and steamboats on the Mississippi in 100 years. Departing from the Quad Cities of Iowa and Illinois and arriving in the Twin Cities of Minnesota in time for the Fourth of July, the event will involve 54 river communities, presenting local events, regional tours, an “armada” of commercial and pleasure craft, steam locomotives, and numerous opportunities to enjoy expeditions on boats and trains along the way.
