[calendar@minorityprofessionalnetwork.com] Sent: Wednesday, September 24, 2003 10:33 AM To: MPN Special Announcement (calendar@MinorityProfessionalNetwork.com) Subject: Mentors and Support Needed for Atlanta Public High School Programs Greetings Potential Volunteer,
This annual special broadcast announcement from MPN is a reminder that volunteer mentors, speakers and partnership support are needed for the Atlanta Public Schools / Metro Employers of Atlanta programs which directly serve our inner city public high school students.
The Metro Employers of Atlanta (MEA), which sponsors both the annual Youth Motivation Day (YMD) program and the Adopt-A-Student Program (AASP), is a very important, vital and necessary non-profit organization that has partnered with the Atlanta Public School (APS) System since 1965. The MEA programs have made a tangible and positive difference in the lives of many thousands of youth through mentorship and development - Adopt-a-Student Program (AASP) and inspiration/motivation - Youth Motivation Day (YMD).
We understand and recognize that practically everyone is extremely busy, but ask that, if possible, you and others you know consider joining us in setting aside a "small quantity of time" to "make a tangible and significant difference" in the lives of younger persons.
Please plan to participate in one or both of these extremely vital and rewarding programs. Please cascade this information to other potential mentors, supporters and speakers.
Thus, whether you can allocate a few hours per month as a mentor (AASP) and/or a single day out of the year as a speaker (YMD), your support, experience, time, inspiration, encouragement, or words of advice or wisdom can make a significant difference in helping to prepare our youth for a better and brighter tomorrow.
About AASP
The Adopt-a-Student Program (AASP) is a school year (September to May) commitment where volunteers from the business sector are assigned as mentors to 11th grade students attending one of the ten Atlanta Public High Schools.
The Adopt-a-Student Program (AASP) is currently in need of mentors/consultants to pair with hundreds of 11th grade Atlanta Public School (APS) students. Please visit the MEA website for details regarding the program, or contact one of the persons listed below for an application. Mentors and students are expected to attend job readiness, study skills, college preparation, motivational and related workshops one Saturday per month from 8:30 - 11:30 AM and to devote an average of 2-4 hours per week communicating either in person or by telephone. The goals of the program include assisting students in making wise career choices and to form lasting relationships.
The initial AASP Mentor Kickoff Meeting and Orientation will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2003 (details are below), and the first workshop will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2003. We are still in need of dozens of mentors to work with our students. Some of our mentors in the past have taken on added responsibility for additional students, and we often have to limit or turn down students eager to learn from and partner with mentors, because we've lacked a sufficient number of volunteer mentors. Please help each student to have his or her own mentor, and make a tangible difference by volunteering to help develop and prepare today's youth to become tomorrow's leaders, educators, professionals and contributors.
About YMD
YMD is a single day commitment (1/2 day or full day speaking engagement). The Annual Youth Motivation Day will take place in all ten APS high schools on Thursday, November 6, 2003. Orientation for Youth Motivation Day will be held on October TBD, 2003. The confirmed date, location and time for this orientation will be made available via the MEA site – http://www.mea-atlanta.org.
